The combined plants, with between 45 and 50 employees, are steel-intensive in their products. Fayette Custom Wire buys large spools of U.S.-made wire and makes it into products used in roads, bridges, buildings and vehicles. Laurel Custom Grating turns carbon steel, stainless steel and special alloys into heavy-duty drainage grates used on roads and bridges. Several idled steel mills have been restarted, and American producers have announced plans to invest in new steelmaking capacity, she added. While the current utilization rates of steel mills are improving, they are still far below the decade prior to the recession, Harrison said. Next steps are to finalize the loan paperwork and the tentative timeline, without weather delays, is to begin construction in early 2019 with completion in the third quarter of 2019, Sandy Steele, SouthernCarolina Regional Development Alliance Director of Operations, said last week. Steele said the new building will be 50,000 square feet and will be constructed on 10 acres of land. Council voted to authorize the St. Peters Parish/Jasper County Public Facilities Corporation to accept a loan agreement with the Santee Cooper Public Service Authority for $850,000 for the new building. The project required the corporation to borrow the principal amount of not exceeding $1.4 million and Santee Cooper agreed to make the loan to the corporation to finance the project. One of the conditions of the loan was that the corporation provides a mortgage on the property where the project will be located. The St. Peters Parish/Jasper County Public Facilities Corporation is a development corporation that assists the county in financing development, Jasper County Administrator Andy Fulghum said. Around 80 percent of all companies interested in locating in South Carolina are looking for an existing building to speed their time to market, Fulghum said. A spec building is an essential tool to recruit new companies into our community. Jasper County is very grateful for the support of Palmetto Electric Cooperative, Santee Cooper, Hurray and the SC Department of Commerce. Without their partnership, this spec building project would not be possible. Steele said SouthernCarolina Alliance has already begun marketing the building to prospects, two of which have visited the site. She said interest continues and will increase as the building construction progresses. Last December, Palmetto Electric Cooperative presented County Council with a $328,850 check to go toward building the fourth spec building in the Cypress Ridge Industrial Park. The cost of the project, according to officials is an estimated $2.2 million. It will include engineering and architecture. Three other businesses are already in operation within the other spec buildings and include Ohio Gratings, Brown-Campbell Company and Coca-Cola Consolidated. Ohio Gratings purchased the first spec building and provides aluminum grating and stainless steel gratings. Brown-Campbell Company is a steel manufacturer, fabricator and distributor offering steel grating fabrication. The company, which has been family owned for more than 60 years, was the second company to purchase a spec building in Cypress Ridge. Coca-Cola Consolidated purchased the third Jasper County spec building in 2017 and held a grand opening this June. The company has already invested $3.5 million and is employing 78 people.\n', 'Architectural drainage designer and manufacturer, Stormtech introduces the Wave Grate, an Australian-first aluminium grate designed to provide an affordable, high performance drainage alternative for residential and commercial bathroom applications. The new Stormtech Wave Grate is a superior anodised aluminium drainage solution designed and manufactured in Australia from 100% Australian materials. Featuring a wave pattern previously unseen in the market, Wave Grate is certified under WaterMark WMTS:-040:2021 to comply with the Plumbing Code of Australia and exceeds Australian Building Standards for quality and safety. To ensure Wave Grate meets the high-performance expectations of all Stormtech products, an insulator has been invented to ensure the aluminium grate and stainless steel channel are separated to eliminate the potential for corrosion. Wave Grate features an easy-to-clean grate design with a silver, brass/gold or satin black finish, and is available in modular kits as well as made-to-length and fixed length units in both uPVC and stainless steel channels. Stormtech managing director Troy Creighton said Wave Grate will change the game for modern drainage by providing an Australian-first solution to architects, specifiers and industry professionals seeking a high-end product at a mid-range price. Wave Grate is 100 per cent Australian in every sense, Creighton said. It is designed and manufactured in Australia for Australians and will give excellent performance suited to our harsh environment. Everything about the Wave Grate is aimed at making life easier. It is comfortable to walk on and more aesthetically pleasing in a bathroom as you cant see dirt in the channel, whilst maintaining high flow rates. Its resistant to corrosion and will never fade. The design also provides a safe wet area finish as it grabs water using surface tension and keeps it off the grate. Creighton added that Stormtech has been waiting to launch a wave grate design for decades. When Stormtech started designing sanitary drainage solutions, extruded aluminium channel was, and still is, deemed not to be a suitable material for sanitary drainage when used in contact with cement or concrete. While our stainless steel grate designs are known all around the world, it wasnt until we had the legal and technical design problems solved, enabling us to apply for the assurance of WaterMark Certification, that we could finally make the Wave Grate a reality for those seeking a mid-range product with superior performance and style, he said.\n', 'By Greg Ritchie Messenger Reporter GRAPELAND NUCOR/Vulcraft Plant Manager Chris Rice inherited the helm of a true institution in Houston County. The Vulcraft steel plant has seen generations of East Texans pass through its doors. The plant employs 500 people currently. It is part of the NUCOR company based in North Carolina. NUCOR started in the mid 1960s with several businesses including Vulcraft in South Carolina. Over a number of years, the company expanded to other locations and established itself in the steel business. Tired of buying steel from third parties, in 1969 NUCOR opened a steel mill to supply Vulcraft. More steel mills were built in other locations, including Nebraska and Jewett, Texas which directly supplies the Grapeland operation. The Grapeland plant traditionally took angle steel to turn it into joists. The plant now brings in sheet steel from NUCOR in Arkansas and turns it into deck. Only three years ago, a grating facility was added and all of the grating for the company was consolidated in Grapeland. The plant has the ability to make grating now from both the angle steel or sheet steel. The company finished 2021 with one of their best years ever due to supply problems around the world causing a steel shortage and increases in prices. Rice sat down to speak with the Messenger, a sign greeting visitors touted the 475 days the plant has gone without an injury something almost unheard of in an industrial setting. Rice worked in several NUCOR locations before coming to Grapeland last year. Rice and his family are thrilled to be living in East Texas. I worked in Midland for a while, but West Texas is not East Texas, Rice said. We love it here. Rice noted that East Texas is not only a great place to live it has proved a perfect place to find talented new team members. I will tell you something that stands out here. At some of the other divisions, it can take a long time to hire people. Here in this area for the type of people that NUCOR looks for we find them right away. And it doesnt feel like it will ever be tapped. The culture and the values here in this community are everlasting. Its phenomenal. Theres a reason that NUCOR is a special place. Its mostly because of our culture and our team. Its not for everybody. And thats ok. We absolutely look for a positive, can-do attitude. People who are excellent team players. You have to want to do something more than just go have a job. If all you are looking for is a job and a paycheck and you dont care about people it wont work. The safety culture is a big part of Rices message to the company. He is proud of the safety record and worries about his people not only at work, but everywhere in their lives. We are changing our safety environment. We are creating an environment where we say, No one gets hurt ever. That doesnt mean just this day or that crew. This team doesnt get hurt here, they dont get hurt at home. So when were gone, we have created an environment for the next generation for our kids and their kids they wont get hurt. The most stressful part of my job is worrying about someone having an injury. As many schools, churches and charities in the area will attest, NUCOR steps in when it can help the community. The Messenger itself has covered some of this charity work, but by no means all. Most of it is done quietly, without publicity. Thats a lot bigger than just me, Rice said. That culture was here long before me. I promise you, I am standing on the shoulders of giants at this place. I live and breathe it, too. I am passionate about it. We dont need recognition for it. We look to hire people who care about others. Its making change in a company and in a community. What we do is so much more than make joists, decking and grating. Were building a community, leaders men and women. The steel funds us. We are a business we have to make money. But who we are is much bigger than that.
